Details:
Pat and Betty Malone’s Sunrise Tree Farm in northwest Benton County has been growing Christmas trees since 1968. The Malones started transitioning over to timber in 1995 on their less productive ground. They have been planting a mix of mostly Douglas-fir and ponderosa pine, with some western red cedar and incense cedar. The current challenge is deciding when and how much of the ponderosa pine to thin given current market conditions. Your input is welcomed.
The tour will include where Malones are planting acorns for oak and an oak restoration site. While Douglas-fir was a main component in Christmas trees, there is a different thought process for growing timber. Optional: Walk out to see our EarthScope geodetic monitoring station. This station tracks plate tectonic movement in our area.
Please RSVP by Thursday, July 11th with phone number & email to: crystal.kelso@oregonstate.edu or call (541) 730-3539
