Oregon Garden Demonstration Harvest Planning – OSWA Tour

Sept 22, 2 PM – Oregon Garden.  The tour will try to depart promptly at 2. Tour will be back to the parking lot at 4:30.

Address: 879 West Main Street, Silverton. 

Meet in the first large parking lot on the right – this is the Garden entrance itself. This is before the resort and after the Gordon House. There will be a sign at the entrance.  

This will be a carpooling tour – on good rock roads. We will try to consolidate the number of cars – so be prepared for that if you can.

This is a tour at the very front end of the harvest project. Margaret Miller and other OFRI and Garden staff are working to restore oak woodlands that were historically present on the site before Christmas trees were planted there about 60 years ago. As part of the project, she will also level a pad for Oregon Garden use and plant other species as part of the demonstration work.

What we will do and see:

We will drive a small loop at The Oregon Garden and stop along the way. We will walk up into the harvest areas – totaling about 4 acres, and talk through the many considerations and questions Margaret has to overcome to accomplish the goals. At this point there are not solid answers – this will be about how to approach a project like this, what questions to ask, and where to find answers. Members of the group will offering perspectives and ideas, and Margaret will share what she’s already done and working on, and what questions are still unanswered. Like most of us approaching a project, she won’t have answers at the beginning.  Topics:

I’ve been there with Margaret and think this is a great project for small woodland owners to learn from – from start to finish. We appreciate her opening it up to us at this stage.

As the project develops, we hope to follow it through the harvest and reforestation.
